Three Distractions on my Desk

Funnily enough, even my three distractions are Pride related. I didn't plan it that way, I promise!

1. Nail polish: painting my nails is the one "girly" thing I love to do and in honor of Brisbane's Pride last week, I painted my nails in rainbow colors. I haven't put the polish away yet and it's sitting here, taunting me.

2. My rainbow earrings and bracelet: an aunt made these for the family last year. We were only meant to choose one color but I sneakily asked for the whole lot.

3. An orchid: this one is not Pride related because it's a brand, spanking new addition. Orchids are my favorite flower and this one was given to me out of the blue today while I was at work. It definitely put a smile on my face.

The 50 Page Rule

I've started reading a new book in preparation for Quill and Me's month long celebration of Pride in June (more on that in the next post) and it's.....bordering on terrible. So my question to you all is: Do I risk the potential bleaching my brain will need and finish the book? Or do I stick to the 50 Page Rule?

The 50 pages is a tad arbitrary. I think I picked up that number from an Oprah bookclub show. The basic premise is that a book should be able to hook you into the story in the first 50 pages. That number could be less, it could be more, but either way it is a line in the sand for the time conscious or discerning reader - if the book doesn't have you in 50 pages, you put it down and walk away. None of this whole "reading through to the end just because I've started it" thing.

The new book has a fun title and premise and I admit to being sucked into reading it because it referenced Queer As Folk in the blurb (Me - you really cannot escape it!) but less than 50 pages in and I'm bored out of my brain. Do I give up or continue? Can I trust that the book will get better? How do you weigh up the potential waste of time vs. the potential payoff?

There are a couple of things that factor into the equation; (a) I'm a pretty busy person and my leisure reading time is limited to late nights and occasional bus rides. Both not ideal times since I tend to be falling asleep! (b) I have a purpose for reading this book (see above). I kinda want to have it read by the end of June. And it's not like this book is an island, I have a whole stack of books I want to read in June. I feel like I owe each book I read at least 50 pages, so I'm probably going to get that far at least, but after that I'm going to have to weigh up all the pros and cons of finishing the book. What if I miss an incredible part somewhere in there because I gave up after 50 pages?

That said, I think this book will be easy enough to give up after 50 pages. It's what I call a "filler" book - the ones you read while waiting for the next book in your favorite series to come out. Easy to pick up and put down and nothing missed much whichever way you go. But what happens if the book is a classic? Do you apply the 50 Page Rule to some books and not to others? I would most definitely be more likely to keep going with a book that I viewed as a classic or more highbrow than I would with a filler book. Yes, my reading habits do have a class system. There's no such thing as a level playing field here, though I have been known to stage an uprising or two. For example, I gave up on Middlesex but I stuck with Torchwood: Border Princes. A bad idea, by the way, because the Torchwood book really had nothing to recommend it. The jury is still out on Middlesex.

Three Distractions On My Desk

Ok, so here's a small glimpse at what resides on my chaotic desk, which somehow attracts clutter like my computer screen attracts dust.

1 - Unreadable notes from the last Quill and Me meeting.
2 - Dancer From The Dance by Andrew Holleran .
3 - A shiny new penny.

Btw before signing off I’d like to add something:

1 – Sorry, Quill!
2 – Thank you, Andrew Holleran.
3 – There is no new, shinny penny on my desk, just a dull, grubby 5 cent piece. *hangs head in shame, then grins* But doesn’t a new, shiny penny sound much more exciting?

Hope all is good,
Me.

Three Distractions on my Desk

We weren't kidding when we said that we would sometimes deviate off the book path! Quill and Me want you to get to know our personalities as well as our opinions, so sometimes we'll do fun get-to-know-you posts. It is my honor to lead off the first edition of 3 Distractions on My Desk!

1. A business card for Paris Texas because when your hair is so long you need to worry you'll sit on it, it's time to get it chopped.

2. Pauline Frommer's Washington, D.C. I'm fine with not using guidebooks too much once I'm actually in a location but stick one on my desk and I'm flipping through it every two seconds trying to memorize the exact address of a store I want to visit!

3. A little rock with eyes painted on it.....no, seriously :). It was a gift from a friend of mine sent when she was living in London. He is wee and cute and doesn't have a name but every time I glance his way I'm reminded of my friend and all the fun times we have had together.

Up next: Me will post the top three things distracting her.

See you next time!
Quill

ps. Name my rock! If you have a suggestion for a name for my pet rock, throw it at me in the comments.

The First Page

Once upon a time in a land far, far away, beneath the vibrant purple canopy of a jacaranda tree, sat two very hot gals (enough with the eyes, it’s true I tell ya! It was 42 degrees and they both very hot! *nods*). Anyway, as I was saying, there were two gals, a tree and it was hot, oh and there was a pitcher of margarita. *woo hoo* As day turned into night, they chatted merrily about politics, the economy, the color yellow and books, which was when they discovered a mutual interest in author dedications. Excitedly, they talked until the sun rose in the sky while drinking margaritas, eating ice-cream and swatting flies, then cheerfully agreed on two things, they loved them all: big, small, witty or sad and they needed to start a blog to record their favorites. So, they did and they both lived happily ever after.

The end.

Update - Quill and Me found this abandoned blog. It used to be run by two gals known as Cinderella and Rapunzel and it sounded kinda cool, so we’re dusting it off and bringing it to life. But be warned, we can get sidetracked very easily, so you may find yourself reading about other stuff (like margaritas).

Welcome to Quill and Me. Enjoy!
